Interlibrary Loan Service
If you have searched our catalogue and cannot find the title you are looking for, the Region of Waterloo Library can help by searching for your book, audiobook, or DVD at libraries across the province.
The Region of Waterloo Library offers Interlibrary Loan service according to the following guidelines:
- Certain collection types will not be considered for ILL. RWL will neither request, nor lend out, to other systems these items:
- Magazines
- Board games
- Oversized books
- Mobile hotspots
- Microfilm
- Museums passes
- Video game console kits
- Individual copies of books for book clubs
- Items less than two years old
- Any item with direct borrowing costs levied by the lending institution
- Patrons are asked to submit no more than 5 requests at a time to prevent delays in processing.
- RWL patrons who do not pick up their requested ILL items may lose ILL privileges.
- If RWL has access to a title in an alternate format (e.g. eBook, Large Print), we may decline to borrow that title through ILL in the requested format. We will remain sensitive to issues of accessibility, however, and will consider each request with care.
- Requests may be placed online, or by visiting, calling, or emailing any RWL branch.
- RWL cannot pass on ILL charges to patrons, as noted in the Public Library Act, and therefore cannot process loans from libraries that charge fees (such as most academic libraries). RWL does pay for regular postage and shipping fees.
Additional External Borrowing Options
Patrons may also apply for a free library card from area universities and colleges: University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Conestoga College.
Reciprocal borrowing agreements allow all Township residents to have free library cards at all public libraries in our Region and select neighbouring libraries. Patrons are encouraged to visit those locations to borrow material, when possible. Please see Borrowing from Other Libraries for a complete list.
